You’re looking just above the camera but it feels like you’re looking at me. To see you give that look in real life would make me melt, but it’s possible I would miss it. Maybe you only lingered there for a brief moment and the flash preserved it. That’s what makes a picture beautiful far beyond aesthetics. A picture is a frozen moment, preserved for posterity and analysis. It captures something that our eyes could never see for as long as picture allows us to look. And a candid picture, one that reveals a micro-expression of truth, is a nothing less than perfection.
The look you gave in that picture is like a window into you, one you usually keep barred and nailed shut. Beauty, truth and pain all intersect in the lines of your face but you have the look of love. The look of someone so broken that their focus is what keeps them anchored. That is where I fit in this fantasy, to be your anchor in your sea of tragedy, to be your reason when you want to give up. You always manage to pull yourself up but you never enjoy it. I want open your eyes to joy and that is the deepest fantasy of all.
